Delphi beta testing leaks over the years

The unofficial official Delphi beta leaks article

Over the past decade, since Delphi 3 was released, there has been this infamous underground community that used to sell “slots” or Gold CDs which contained beta copies of Delphi, C++ Builder. If you look around, there is “Delphi 2 with full source codes”, “Delphi Voyager Compiler”. That was the last known leaks (other than Turbo Pascal 7 source code leak) of the DCC32 compiler.

Delphi 6, 7, Kylix, 2005 beta leaks
Borland formerly operated an FTP server and links would be given. However, that site could be accessible by anyone with an FTP connection. Surprisingly, nobody bothered to make it password protected nor watermark the huge ZIP files (approx 250mb).

Those Chinese PHPBB “Delphi Forums” (now defunct) would have someone who posts FTP links to Borland’s FTP site along with a serial number. There is some claims that someone uploaded Kylix betas to Chinese FTP sites.

Delphi 2006 beta leaks

Since the rise of FTP and forums, there have been the most infamous DA.RU (Russian) board (Now defunct) which someone posted beta links for Delphi 2006 and everyone started to download it.

CodeGear Delphi 2007, 2009 beta leaks

Since Borland created this “CodeGear” tools division, ditto, someone posted the FTP links on Russian illegal (now defunct) forum along with a valid serial number.

Delphi 2010, “XE” beta leak

The most infamous leak, by South American person and advertised on certain illegal websites, was traced down because this blog raised the attention of the leak to Embarcadero. Since the installer was watermarked, Embarcadero could find who exactly leaked it.

Delphi 2012 “XE2” beta leak

Partial files are on file-sharing websites (Search for “Pulsar 5”, “Pulsar Beta 5”, “Delphi Pulsar Beta 6”, “Pulsar Beta 7″*, “Delphi Pulsar Beta 7″*). There are discussions about Delphi “64-bits”, “Pulsar” and Mac OS on illegal sites and binaries made with 64-bit being circulated around.**

* Pulsar Beta 7 (according to a certain Turkish newsgroup posting, was released on 8th July 2011).
** If someone can kindly post a SCIMARK2 Delphi 64-bit binary that would be most appreciated.

Here are some advice to prevent leaks:
a) Make sure you call the person and verify their identity before joining the beta. This also includes an EULA which clearly states penalties before signing the dotted line.

b) Expose the leak identity and bring civil action to them. It seems with this current state of leaks, it seems that almost everyone talking about Delphi Pulsar (just search for “Delphi Pulsar”) behind the backs of the Embarcadero Legal Dept.

c) Make sure that people are properly informed how to post to supposedly closed Beta forums. Do you find it strange that every now and then, there is someone who posts QC issues along with questions to the general forums? Hours later (or even days later), they get deleted.
